LABUK BAY PROBOSCIS MONKEY SANCTUARY

Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary offers another Dutch Monkey preservation area (Proboscis Monkey) for tourists who want to see these animals up close without having to go any further. The sanctuary is located in the middle of mangrove forests along the nearby village Samawang in Labuk Bay, Sandakan. It is located 38 km from Sandakan Airport and takes about an hour to get to the center. Half of the road is a gravel road. For anyone who likes to see these unique animals, this is a must to visit this place. Observation timetable is at 11.30 am - 1.30 pm and 4.30 pm - 6.00 pm

Masjid Besar Sandakan

   Small Sandakan's first mosque, built in the early 1880's, the mosque lost and can not in effect yet. After the second world war, City Mosque, built on a hill near the Old Slipway '. The mosque is small and can not take many. The need to get a bigger mosque and a suitable site began significantly in 1970. Until 1984 the need for a new mosque, the Great Mosque of Sandakan has become a reality, construction was initiated until construction is completed in 1988. Although the Great Mosque of Sandakan is simple but it still looks elegant and eye-catching with its location in Sandakan Bay.
   

Pulau Berhala

    .Idol Island is located outside the entrance to the village facing Sandakan Bay Sim-Sim. Among the unique on the island are two of the amalgamated sandstone hill with a height of 600 feet. On the hill there is a house fire. The area is steep hill Forest where there are many local plants that can only be found in the coastal area of focus botanist. There is a village in the western part of the island which is connected to the open spaces to the beach equipped with picnic facilities. In the end the Southern part of the island consists of steep rock cliffs reddish. There are several caves on the banks of this coral.

Sandakan Memorial Park

  
  Sandakan Memorial Park was built on the exact location of the Japanese’s Sandakan prisoner of war camp (POW camp) during WWII although the size of the park is only a small fraction of the original camp area. Here, in the park, there is also a pavilion or a small museum that serves as an information centers for visitors to read about the war and to learn about the lives and suffering that the prisoner have to endure at the POW camp. The horror of the infamous Sandakan Death March was described in details here and there is also a scale model of the original POW camp. The Sandakan Death March is the forced march of the prisoners in Sandakan to Ranau which is about 150 miles (240 km) west of the camp through impenetrable jungle and treacherous routes. All together there were 3 separate marches, with the first march started in January 1945, involving the fittest and healthiest prisoners. The last march which began in March 1945 consists of the remaining prisoners. Prisoners who are too weak or sick to march were shot. There was no account of what happened after the last march as there was no survivor to tell their story as they either died from starvation, illnesses or brutalitie
